On Day One of her sobriety—originally a planned 90-day detox challenge—Charlotte had the foresight to document the clarity and anxiety of that momentous occasion. Now, over 19 months later, she has a dedicated following of what have become infectiously exuberant recovery updates.
Charlotte is a professional makeup artist and beauty writer in Derry, Ireland whose experience as a plus-size Wilhelmina Model in NYC led her to question, “What is beauty?” The self-acceptance and self-love that she’s found in the answer has inspired her to work to inspire other women to feel beautiful and confident as a whole person not only for what‘s on the outside.
The principal motivation for my creativity.
To give a positive voice to others in recovery or looking to recover, to show that there is life beyond alcohol, & to share strength with others.
The principal motivation for my sobriety.
I had to see what life would be like on the other side. I didn't want to be the girl that didn't have the bravery to live the life I dreamed of.
My favorite qualities in a person. Kindness, self-belief, bravery, nurturing, loving and funny
What I appreciate most about my friends. Their glamour and loving hearts and their humour.
My main fault. I'm way too hard on myself, very self-critical and maybe just a tad to deep.
My favorite occupation.
Creating art and making people happy.
My dream of happiness. Is to live in the sun with a loving partner, have children and create something beautiful in the world.
My idea of misery. Being drunk/high surrounded with fake friends, sleeping all day, partying all night… No routine.
My greatest regret. Not being present in my life for so many beautiful opportunities.
My proudest moment.
Falling
in
love
with
myself.
Other than myself, who would I like to be? Apart from someone who has lots of cash… I'm very happy being me right now.
Where I would like to live. In the sun near the beach in an artsy, boho place. I don't know where that is but I'm sure the Universe will guide me.
My favorite color.
My favorite authors. I tend to read more spiritual stuff. I read from lots of different authors but I don't have a favourite.
My favorite poets. W.B. Yeats
My favorite composers/musicians. The Doors, Bryan Ferry, Kylie Minogue, Blonde, Talking Heads, New Order, Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, Velvet Underground, David Bowie…this list could go on and on I love music so much.
My favorite creative people (painters/graphic designers/photographers/fashion designers/etc.) Andy Warhol, James White, Guy Bourdin, Banksy
My hero(es). My mother and father. Charlize Theron.
My favorite food and drink. Coffee. Pizza.
My drug of (lack of) choice when I was using. Champagne and really anything I could get at the time.
What I hate most of all. Trolls—hateful people, low-vibration folk.
The natural talent I'd like to be gifted with. I would love to be a dancer. I love to dance but my dancing is just boogieing, I would love to be a real dancer like ballerina or someone who could do the tango.
How I want to die. In my bed surrounded with the people I love most.
My present state of mind. At the moment I'm peaceful.
Faults for which I have the most indulgence. Being a drama queen
My favorite motto.
Don't give up.
ABOUT RECOVERY REVELATIONS™
Our Recovery Revelations Questionnaire is based on the questions of a late 19th century English "confessions album" later mistakenly attributed to French novelist, Marcel Proust. Vanity Fair uses a version for their Proust Questionnaire and James Lipton uses a variation on Inside the Actors' Studio.
You are encouraged to engage the interviewee(s) and explore their answers further in the comments.
